Abstract
Five types of recording current meter (Geodyne film, Geodyne tape, Bergen (Aanderaa), Plessey, and Tiefenstrommesser (Hydrowerkstätten)) were compared at W.H.O.I. Site "D" (39°20'N, 70°W) during the period 16-24 July 1967. One of each type of meter was installed near 500m. depth on each of three moorings. Comparison of the eight usable records from the total of 15 instruments shows (a) good agreement (+/- 2 cm/sec. Extreme) between estimates of mean velocity, most of the scatter being due to differences of direction (b) good agreement (within a factor of 2) in estimates of the kinetic energy spectrum for low-frequency horizontal motions (c) at frequencies above 1 cycle per hour, systematic differences in estimates of kinetic energy, partly due to coarsenesss in digitizing speed in some types of meter.
