Abstract | In making decisions, such as how to find food and mates or how to avoid predators, many animals utilize information that is produced by others. Such individuals are referred to as 'observers' in the social learning literature (Heyes & Galef 1996) or 'eavesdroppers' in the signal-receiver literature (McGregor 1993). Socially transmitted information may simply be an inadvertent by-product of the 'demonstrating' individual's behaviour, or a signal targeted towards a particular individual or audience. Any learning that involves the use of socially provided information is termed `social learning'. Social learning refers to any incidence in which individuals acquire new behaviour or information about their environment via observation of, or interaction with, other animals or their products. |
