Abstract | In the port of Antwerp (Flanders, Belgium), the almost 80 year old Van Cauwelaert lock (1928)is now due for a major overhaul. Renovation works will primarily include replacement of theoriginal (!) steel rolling gates (wagon type, operated by a mechanical truck) by new wheelbarrowtype gates together with all their gearing and auxiliary equipment. This first part of this paper gives an overview of the different works to be carried out in this renovation project.
Due to the boundary conditions of the increased safety water level to retain and the dimensionsof the existing concrete structure (limited width of gate recesses!), special considerations arenecessary in designing the new lock gates (rolling gates, wheelbarrow type). In the second part ofthis paper some comments are given on this particular issue. |
