Abstract
Two devices for sampling sublittoral benthic macrofauna, viz. the Van Veen grab and the Van Arkel flushing sampler, were tested for their efficiency. In a comparison test at the Breehorn neither of the two devices was able to collect the total benthic macrofauna. The Van Veen grab takes only a limited top-layer of the sediment, missing most of the deep-living fauna. At test conditions, some heavy-shelled bivalve molluscs were scarcely or not at all sampled by the Van Arkel flushing sampler. In some sediments (firm clay, musselbeds) the flushing sampler cannot penetrate. When the two devices are used together, the benthic macrofauna can be sampled fairly completely. Finally the behaviour of some common bivalve molluscs during sampling by the Van Arkel flushing sampler is explained.
