Abstract
The available zoeal evidence for brachyuran phylogeny is reviewed. Two main questions are addressed: first, the origin and early evolution of the primitive crab groups; and second, the subsequent phylogeny of the higher brachyurans. In both cases the evidence is equivical, and, as in adult studies, its successful interpretation depends on the recognition of primitive as opposed to derived characters and the discrimination of resemblances resulting from common ancestry and convergence. Tentative phylogenetic schemes, based entirely on the zoeal stages, are presented for the heterotrematous eubrachyurans.
