Abstract | The toxicity of Cu2+ and Zn2+ in concentrations of respectively 2-40 ppm and 10-200 ppm for the lugworm Arenicola marina L. was determined under static conditions (pH 7.70; 15°C). The values of Lt50 for the different concentrations of Cu2+ and Zn2+ vary between 47 and 129 hours, the values of Lc50 (96 hr) are 1.6 ppm for Cu2+ and 136 ppm for Zn2+. Different kinds of visible sublethal effects are observed. There was no mortality during the whole experiment (max. 186 hr) for specimen in blanco medium (pH 7.70) and for animals in medium with different activity of H3O+ (pH 6.35; 6.70; 7.10). The quantity of toxicant in the medium, measured at the end of the experiment by anodic stripping voltametry, was less than the quantity that was added to the medium at the start of the experiment. The oxygen affinity of a solution of Arenicola haemoglobin in which the concentration of Cu2+ or Zn2+ was 5.10-7 -5.10-3M was determined using an oxygen diffusion chamber technique. The O2-partial pressures at halfsaturation (p50) are 6.5 mm Hg to 0.22 mm Hg (pH 6.6; 7.0; 7.5; 8.1; 15°C) The Bohr-factor varied from -0.59 for pure Arenicola haemoglobin to -0.38 for haemoglobin with Cu2+ in a concentration of 5.10-4 M and to -0,42 for the same concentration of Zn2+. The results are discussed in relation to the measured environmental parameters. |
