This study examins the situation for two groups of parameters: the heavy metals and the nutrients. The main source for these substances is the output of the river Schelde. Influence from the French industry is presumed but difficult to demonstrate. The amounts of heavy metals found in the Belgian part of the North Sea are comparable to the concentrations found elsewhere in European coastal waters. Although there is an important input of nutrients there still are no real problems of eutrophication. This situation is the result of dillution, diffusion and a quick removal of these substances by the residual current.
