Abstract
In January and February 1990 Belgium has been hit by several severe storms. The paper intends to describe and to analyse the hydrodynamic conditions in the fore shore during the morphologically most damaging storm of 26-28 February 1990, and its morphological effects upon the beaches along the Belgian coast. Moreover it considers the ensuing beach evolution over a period of a fortnight and over one of a full year. It also put forwards a short time beach, evolution prognosis and discusses causal relationships. It pays attention to the longshore variation of the immediate and residual effects of the storm as well as to the reactions of different morphodynamical beach sections. The behaviour of the beach (or beach section) is monitored and analysed departing from an adquate time series of beach-unit-volumes, used as a numerical parameter for the morphological changes and measured in five fixed stations. The paper avoids explicitly the geological approach of process recognition by the sedimentary products.
