Abstract
Because of the negative effects of the daily inputs from rivers, dumping and the atmosphere of large quantities of heavy metals, organochlorines, oil, nutrients and radionuclides, i.e. fish diseases, reduction of seal and dolhin populations, oxygen depletion and a still increasing number of victims of oil pollution, the "Werkgroep Noordzee Vlaanderen" call for an immediate ending of polluting activities. Despite the intentions, expressed by the Ministers of the North Sea countries on the first Ministerial North Sea Conference in Bremen in 1984 to reduce the inputs of polluting substances, hardly any effective international measure has been taken in the last two years. The environmental, educational, scientific and social organisations from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, The Nederlands, and The United Kingdom therefore stress that the ministers should come to an agreement about their common responsibilities for the north west European marine ecosystem and consequently take the necessary steps to prevent further deterioration and provide remedial action where necessary.
