Abstract
    The North Sea is one of the world's most intensively used shipping areas. The paper discusses various measures taken on the international level to protect the marine environment against adverse impacts resulting from shipping operations. Measures to prevent, cure and compensate polution damages are discussed. In conclusion, some recommendations are made for possible action by the Belgian government:- ratificationand effective implementation of Annexes III, IV and V of MARPOL.- using the opportunity of the Belgian chair of the European Communities next year to stimulate development of a regional VTS for the southern North Sea.- ratification of the 1971 Fund Convention, and the 1984 protocols regarding liability and compensation for oil pollution damages caused by ships.- developing initiatives to reach international agreement on a special convention for liability and compensation for damages from accidents with hazardous and noxious substances.
