Abstract
Although in Colombia there is a vast knowledge of bioecology, seed production and culture of various commercially important native bivalve species, bivalve aquaculture is an activity that has developed only at the experimental level. In this manuscript a description of the national production and commercialization of bivalves is given. Furthermore, an overview of the resources is provided with special emphasis on the technologies used for seed production and culture. The authors present an analysis of the advantages, opportunities and problems related to the large-scale expansion of bivalve culture in Colombia. Finally, a series of medium- and long-term actions required at the national and international level to promote the growth of a bivalve aquaculture industry are proposed.
