Abstract | Data about the Belgian landings and their values are only available from the late nineties onwards. Nevertheless, older data was found in fragmented journals and publications. This study is based on the VLIZ integrated database ‘A century of Belgian sea fisheries’. On the basis of these data, a description of the history of the Belgian landings and their values can be made. Belgian landings can be divided into the Belgian landings in Belgian ports and Belgian landings in foreign ports. Each of these landings performs a specific progress in time. While the landings in Belgian ports showed a decreasing trend for the period 1929-1999, the landings in foreign ports showed an increasing trend during the period 1950-1999. The five most important fishing areas for landings and their values in both Belgian and foreign ports were the Coastal Sea, North Sea (south), Central North Sea (west), Central North Sea (east) and the Icelandic Sea. Nevertheless, the importance of these fishing areas changed a lot in time. The causes of these changes need to be investigated in more detailed to obtain a clear view of the shifts in Belgian fishing areas. |
