Abstract | Using a diver-operated net, Retromysis nura n. gen., n. sp. was sampled in the dimly lit zone ofa superficial marine cave on Minorca Island (W. Mediterranean). The females of the new genus areexceptional due to a large sternal plate transversely projecting behind the marsupium. The malesare characterized by a mediocaudal lobe on the appendix masculina and by a pair of modified,backwards-oriented setae terminally on the antennular trunk, while the females show normal, smooth, forwards-oriented setae in this position. With this first description, a total of three monotypicgenera belonging to the tribe Heteromysini are now known from marine and anchihaline caves in thewestern Mediterranean. |
