Abstract
Inability to repopulate adequately probably sets the northern limit of Chthamalus montagui, Patella vulgata, P. aspera, Gibbula umbilicalis and Monodonta lineata, creates unstable populations in adjacent regions, and may result in greater sizes and life-spans in the north. Incomplete data support expectations of summer breeding in the north, winter breeding in the south. Poor years in the north do not result from gonad failure.
