Abstract | The interactions between aquaculture and the aquatic environment are complex, involving such concepts as the limitations placed upon the industry by the quality of the natural environment, the ability of the environment to accommodate the waste materials produced by aquaculture, the relationships between environment, husbandry practices, public perceptions and sales etc. Emphasis is laid on the impact of antifoulants and therapeutants on the environment, and on the regulations controlling their use. Trends are identified, which appear to be leading towards more rigorous assessment of the environmental safety of chemicals, tighter control of residue levels in products, increasing availability of information to the public, and more closely defined discharge controls. |
