Abstract
This paper outlines the various legislative enactments which control safety. health, and welfare at work, including the aquaculture industry in Ireland. Particular emphasis is placed on the requirement for a written "Safety Statement" under the Safety, Health, and Welfare at work Act, 1989. The Safety Statement, which must be based on an identification of hazards and an assessment of risks, is basically the written expression by management of its programme for the prevention of occupational accidents and illnesses and the promotion of appropriate safety and health standards at the workplace. The paper also outlines some of the principle features of recent EC Council Directives and their interrelationship with national legislation in Ireland.
