Abstract
The Gulf of Trieste is the farthest North-Eastern part of the Adriatic Sea. The freshwater inputs consist mainly of the Isonzo and the Timavo rivers, as well as a number of submarine water springs along the whole coast. The coasts are more or less densely inhabited and the urban and industrial wastes, treated or untreated, flow into the area. For the economic impact of the long line mussel cultures in the Gulf of Trieste, a monitoring program in four mussel farms was carried out seasonally during 1991, in order to assess water quality in mussel farms and quality of mussels. With the data obtained, it has been possible to demonstrate the influence of both waste discharge and riverine inputs on the stations considered.
