Abstract
Extensive mariculture has an old tradition in rural fisheries of West Africa, and the South Pacific. It should be seen as a comprehensive management principle rather than as another production method. This view is fully endorsed by its large scale application in Japan. Work in this field contributes to the understanding both of development and of some fundamental issues on fishery science, marine and general ecology.
