Abstract
    A series of five experiments on the rearing of turbot larvae has been conducted. The larvae were reared from hatching in large concrete tanks (four of 20m³ and one of 2 200m³) stocked with natural plankton. The larvae did not survive in two autumn/winter experiments. A high mortality was observed at temperatures below 7°C. In three summer experiments a high survival was noticed. In one case, the larvae were preyed to extinction by mackerel. In two experiments, a survival of maximally 62% = 7 471 larvae or 63 larvae.m.-3 was recorded at termination at an age of 24-32 days. All larvae were normally pigmented and survived weaning to dry food pellets. The results indicate that extensive rearing in large concrete tanks with natural plankton, may favorably compete with intensive rearing based on feeding with Brachionus/Artemia.
