Abstract
Newly-hatched Astacus astacus were placed under four different experimental conditions: 1) together with their own mother; 2)together with another female from which her own larvae were removed; 3) together with another female which had not carried eggs recently; and 4) without any female. The experiments have demonstrated that females which have not carried eggs recently predate on larvae and that there is some mechanism that prevents females with offspring from eating larvae during the first ten days after the larvae have moulted the first time.
