Abstract
    Fecundity, egg quality, growth and mortality of five freshwater reared broodstocks of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar were recorded in successive spawnings at the Laukaa Fish Culture Research Station. The age of the spawners varied from 4+ to 14+yr and the number of spawns from 3 to 8 in the different stocks. Females matured at the age of 4+ and at a size of 1kg. The somatic growth of mature fishes was slow and ceased at 4kg. Mortality of mature fishes was stable at 29.9%.yr-1 throughout. Females survived better than males, which led to clear a majority of females in older stocks. The relative fecundity did not vary systematically from one spawn to another, and averaged 1 229 eggs per female.kg-1. The egg size increased with the number of spawnings up to the fourth. The egg mortality varied from 2.5 to 25.1% and showed no trends with parental age or size. A model to optimize the rearing cycle of broodstock is proposed, based on the fecundity -growth, and mortality results. Stable egg production with low broodstock biomass is achieved when a high number of spawnings and a short stock renewal time are used.
