Abstract
Ovarian maturity and a peak of vitellogenin (VTG) synthesis is reached by eyestalk-ablated animals within an average of 40 days. Molt occurs 35 days after surgery. Significantly longer intervals are needed for sham-operated animals. The VTGs, hemolymph circulating yolk precursors, appear in different forms according to the maturity stages. They undergo structural variations resulting in different electrophoretical mobilities. Eyestalk ablation can be useful for increasing the recruitment of mature females in natural or experimental populations.
