Abstract
A demand feeding system was developed to automatically maintain optimal algal densities in laboratory zooplankton cultures. Maximum densities obtained of the Australian cladoceran, Daphnia carinata, was 11000 ind.l-1 with continuing population health and reproductive capacity. Maintenance of the system was minimal at about 10min.d-1. Future research aims to refine the system, broaden its applicability for mariculture, determine maximum sustainable yield, and automate harvest.
