Abstract
This report gives a number of recommendations aimed at minimizing inbreeding, genetic drift and hence loss of fitness in fish broodstocks. Various meausures are put forward which are aimed at preserving genetic resources by protecting the natural habitat of endagered stocks of fish and by applying population genetic principles in the management of fish broodstocks. Two basic recommendations concerning national strategies introduce the list of proposals, then follow six practices which should be applied irrespective of the scale and purpose of the culture programme.
