Abstract | Oreochromis mossambicus was subjected to netting, handling, exercise, and transport-stress situations. Haematocrits, blood glucose, and lactate levels were subsequently measured. Results showed that haemoconcentration occurred within 6h of exercise, a condition which prevailed for 24h. Transport resulted in a similar pattern. The results of glucose analysis underline the importance of this parameter in stress evaluation. Rapid, substantial increases in glucose were followed by a gradual recovery. Exercise and transport had the most marked effects on blood-lactate profiles. The results obtained in this study highlight the importance of careful handling and transportation of this species. |
