Abstract
Because of the climatic conditions in Hungary fish culture is seasonal and highly dependent upon the different weather effects. On the other hand, geothermal energy is abundantly available in the country, and can be used to control the water temperature of the fish production systems throughout the year. In the Fish Culture Research Institute at Szarvas, experiments on the development of intensive fish production systems heated with thermal effluents have been carried out since 1974. By the support of FAO/UNDP an experimental warm-water recycling system heated with geothermal energy was built in the Institute. Based on the results gained with this system, a new type of fish-production system has been elaborated that meets the requirements of large-scale fish farming. Two parallel plastic lined earthen raceways with a volume of 150m³ each were constructed in greenhouses. The water bodies of these raceways are connected by two air-lift pumps that are circulating and aerating the water. The waste materials are continuously removed from the system by a third air-lift pump. The system heated with geothermal energy has been tested for the production of catfish during the winter period. In a 7-months growing period, 3.3t net yield was obtained in the system.
