Abstract
    During July 1982 and July 1983, a series of stations located along a transect from Barcelona to beyond the channel between Mallorca and Menorca were sampled several times. The chlorophyll a distribution showed a pronounced maximum (with concentrations sometimes greater than 2 mg/m³) at depths ranging from 40 to 90 m. Primary production of the water column was estimated in some of the transects with the 14C method, using simulated in situ incubators. The amount of carbon fixed per unit volume per hour showed generally a peak at the level of the deep chlorophyll maximum, but primary production there appeared to be light-limited and productivity indices were low when compared with those of the surface layers. Total carbon fixation for the water column ranged from 100 to 300 mg C/m²/day. The phytoplankton ofthe chlorophyll maximum contributed up to 30% of the total productivity of the water column. Some hypotheses on the origin and maintenance of the deep chlorophyll maximum are discussed.
