Abstract
The seasonal production of zooplankton in the frontal system off Ushant has been investigated in a study of the digestive enzymmes of zooplankton, and the physical, trophic and faunistic characteristics of the mixed and stratified areas. Two biological systems can be identified. The zooplankton biomass is higher in the stratified area but not correlated to the chlorophyll biomass which is more abundant in mixed waters. The importance of nanoflagellates in such a productive system is discussed: they appear to be more related than diatoms to zooplankton production, migratory behaviour and digestive enzymes. The importance of the boundary system in production is discussed. It is concluded that the physical structure, in inducing two distinct phytoplankton populations, indirectly creates different zooplanktonic production systems on either side of the front.
