Abstract | In the semi-closed Bay of Douarnenez, Brittany, a study has been undertaken to quantify the biomass and production of four different 'size categories' of the benthos, microphytobenthos, meiofauna, macrofauna and large predatory echinoderms, in four sediment types, coarse sand and unstable, stable and muddy fine sand. In fine sands, the microphytobenthos production depends mainly on light intensity, but animal production depends mainly on the stability of the sediment. With increasing stability the smaller size categories become more limiting for the larger ones and in muddy fine sand a state of trophic imbalance is reached. |
