Abstract | Rabbit antisera were raised against Mytilus edulis from Arhus Bay, Denmark, and against M. galloprovincialis from the Mediterranean. By means of crossed immuno-electrophoresis, using intermediary gels containing antibodies against one of the Mytilus types and receiver gels containing antibodies against the other, type specific and type-non-specific reactions were recorded. Populations of Mytilus edulis from the Baltic, Wadden Sea, Long Island Sound and Oregon, populations of M. galloprovincialis from the Mediterranean, and also mixed populations of the two forms from Ireland, were all studied by means of the described method. The results are compared with a similar investigation of Cerastoderma edule and C. lamarcki/glaucum, and it is indicated that the two Mytilus forms, edulis and galloprovincialis, are conspecific. |
