Abstract | Forcing plankton rich seawater up through a partially fluidised bed of filter-feeding molluscs permits very dense stocking and prevents fouling and cohesion of the animals whilst promoting good and uniform growth. Impounding seawater facilitates control of algae, which compete for nutrient required by phytoplankton, and on none commercial filter feeders which would deplete it. Optimum conditions for oyster and clam growth can be achieved by controlling also sedimentation, solar heating, nutrients, salinity, water flow rates, etc. Details of pond management to these ends are described and working systems illustrated |
