Abstract
As a consequence of the severe winter 1995-1996, the grey swimming crab Liocarcinus vernalis apparently disappeared from the Southern North Sea, at least from the waters close to the shore. In the same period, most specimens of the sand hermitcrab Diogenes pugilator died in the area: only a very few specimens survived, and only on the western Belgian coast (the species was no longer found in the Netherlands). In 1995, before winter, both species were extremely abundant in Belgium and common in the Netherlands. In summer 1996 both species were still common at Boulogne-sur-Mer in the easternmost part of the English Channel.
