The number and morphology of mitotic chromosomes and of oocyte bivalents, the amount of chromosomal deoxyribonucleic acid, the somatic association of chromosomes and the precociously separating daughter kinetochores are the cytological characters of Ascidians so far considered. When the evolution of chromosomes within the class Ascidiacea seems to occur by reduction of chromosome number, a relative increase of metacentric chromosomes is noticed.
