Abstract | Hydroid fauna of the Mediterranean Sea is one of the best known in the World. As a suspension filter-feeding group, they play an important role in the transfer of energy from the pelagic to the benthic systems. Here, an updated taxonomical knowledge was provided on the hydroid fauna and differences in hydroid species between an anthropogenic impacted area and a much more pristine area, Porto Cesareo (La Strea) and Otranto (Torre del Serpe) were addressed. Here, a total of 31 taxa were recorded, 12 species from Porto Cesareo and 17 from Otranto. For both sites, the general trend showed a higher proportion in the number of thecates vs. athecates, suggesting that hydrological conditions during winter are intense. Differences between sites are due to biogeographic, oceanographic and ecological factors. |
