Abstract
Diagnostic criteria for tidal deposits and for sub-, inter- and supratidal subenvironments, reflecting the waxing and waning bidirectional tidal flow are reviewed from the literature. Published examples of recent and ancient tidal deposits are examined for diagnostic characteristics and for palaeo-flow as well as tidal range estimates. Tidal deposits exhibit great variety in facies associations. Continuous sub-, inter- and supratidal sequences are rare. Shifts of the major tidal channels and the intertidal drainage channels produce local microtrans- and regressive sequences, superimposed on the general trends. The great diversity in tidal deposits means that a single characteristic can seldom be used as a criterion for identification. Instead, the associations of several characteristics form the criteria by which the tidal origin of a deposit can be deemed likely or certain. Estimates of the order of magnitude of palaeo-tidal flow or orbital motion can be based on specific characteristics of the lithofacies, although the methods used still have shortcomings. The determination of the palaeo-tidal range remains very difficult because no diagnostic features indicative of the LW zone have yet been found.
