Abstract
The area between Nieuwpoort en Oostende in the Belgian coastal plain was inhabited during the Roman period and since the High Middle Ages. On the basis of stratigraphical and sedimentological investigations, together with absolute age determinations, we reconstructed the landscape during these periods. The map of the top of the Pleistocene sediments shows no Early or Middle Holocene tidal channel in this area. However, our investigations show that the Late Holocene channel is down cutting in deposits of the palaeochannel. The time of silting up of the Late Holocene tidal channel was dated at ca. 1640-1410 cal BP, or 310-540 AD. According to archaeologists, the Romans abandoned the coastal plain at the end of the 3rd century AD because of flooding. Our investigations show that this period is characterized by a general silting up.
