Abstract
The new genus, Diacanthurus, is proposed for a group of three recent and one fossil species formerly assigned to the heterogeneous genus Paguruas Fabricius. In addition to the transfer of Pagurus clifdenensis Hyden & Forest (fossil), P. spinulimanus (Miers), P. rubricatus (Henderson), and P. ophthalmicus (Ortmann), two new species, Diacanthurus ecphyma sp.nov. from New Caledonia and Western Australia, and D. richeri sp.nov. from New Caledonia are assigned to this new genus. Expanded diagnoses or descriptions and illustrations of all recent species are provided.
