Abstract | Traditional coastal communities are recognized forinspiring artistic representations, justifying the interestin analysing the role of art in the image productionthat is related to them. In this paper we aim tounderstand the interference of photography in theproduction of maritime memories, with focus on thePortuguese town of Nazaré. This picturesque fishingvillage attracted many Portuguese and foreign artists, who contributed not only to the visual representationof this community but also to the construction ofa national identity by conveying a poetic image thatlinked the homeland to the daily struggle with thesea. We propose to reflect upon the photographicappeal that Nazaré represented in the first half ofthe 20th century by examining the thematic focus ofthese pictures, the balance between their aestheticvalue and their iconographic and documentary parts, and the practices that have changed, but continue todetermine the maritime identity of Nazaré. |
