Abstract
Short scattered cilia occur on the jaws’ inner surface of the crossed pedicellariae of Marthasterias glacialis. They are rather thick cilia that arise from a slight epidermal swelling. Each of them includes a tight fascicle of microtubules running all along their length. These microtubules reach a peculiar dense lens-like structure located at the ciliary apex. The shape, position and fine structure of both the cilia and their supporting cells suggest that they are mechanoreceptive.
