Abstract
Different harbours around the globe have slightly different strategies for dealing with the accumulated fine cohesive sediment at the bottom of harbours. This difference in strategies can be related to different properties of the cohesive sediment, but in order to do that, we first need to understand the characteristics of the mud types in the different harbours. A better understanding of mud may lead to an optimisation of the current dredging method and even bring about new innovative methods for cohesive sediment management in harbours. This paper provides a summary of the tools and methodologies in cohesive sediment research that are currently being developed at Flanders Hydraulics Research in partnership with Antea Group and DotOcean in Belgium.
