Abstract
    An investigation of the abundance of fish in very shallow water in the northern Baltic proper was started in July 1975 and terminated in August 1976. Drop traps enclosing a bottom area of 1 m² and the water column above have been used down to a depth of 0.5 m. Out of 83 drops only six were completely without any trapped fish. 16 species were caught but only a few of these occurred frequently. On average, the total abundance was 15.7 fish.m-2 with a mean biomass of 4.3 g.m-2 (2.98.m-2 if a school of rudd is excluded). The sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus Pallas) dominated and was caught in 61 % of the drops. Its mean abundance was 4.9 fish.m-2 and the corresponding biomass 0.9 g.m-2. A school of rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus L.) caught in one drop affected the mean biomass value considerably and the mean for rudd was 39 % of the total although this species was present in two drops only. Shannon-Weaver indices for abundance and biomass have been calculated and both averaged 0.47.
