Abstract | North Atlantic species of the genera Dictyota and Dilophus were studied in respect of morphology, anatomy, crossbreeding patterns and chromosome numbers. The feature "multilayered medulla", as used by Agardh, does not differentiate between the genera. No other separating characters could be found. Thus the genus Dilophus is withdrawn. The included taxa are now transferred to the older genus Dictyota. Dictyota guajirae, Dictyota neglecta, Dictyota humifusa and Dictyota caribaea are described as new species. D. hamifera is recorded for the first time from the Atlantic, while D. alternans could be indicated first for the region of the Macaronesian Islands. A survey is given on the distribution of the Dictyota species occurring in the North Atlantic. Included are discussions on taxonomical problems. New combinations in the genus Dictyota are communicated. |
