Abstract
Data are presented to evaluate further the "abundance/biomass comparison" method for the detection of pollution disturbance in marine benthic communities. The results suggest that this technique cannot be used in estuarine intertidal communities. The "grossly polluted" configurations appeared under unpolluted conditions, while "undisturbed" patterns were found under polluted conditions. The results support similar conclusions by Beukema (1988) for the intertidal flats of the Dutch Wadden Sea.
