Abstract
This study has been carried out to determine the effect of industrial and domestic pollutions on water salinity and alkalinity of the Ergene River and its branches appearing in different parts of the Thrace region in North-West Turkey. Pollution, salinity, and alkalinity levels were investigated by comparing the analyses data obtained for each studied station. As a whole, rates of the observed parameters vary according to years, seasons, and sampling points. The values of salt (EC25 X 10³), sodium, potassium, calcium+magnesium, chlorine, carbonate, bicarbonate as well as SAR, RSC and other parameters during the extremely dry 1994 year were estimated to be much higher than during the previous two years. On the other hand, while the lowest amounts of the salinity and alkalinity parameters in all studied stations were recorded during the rainy season (November-May), the highest levels of the parameters mentioned were determined for the dry season (June-October). Despite the differences in the quality of water samples taken from different parts (stations) of the river, it may be concluded that the Muratlı-2 section of the river with the highest salinity and alkalinity levels, is the most polluted one. Values of EC25X106, Na+, K+, Ca+Mg2+, Cl-+ CO32-, HCO3-, SAR and RSC in the samples taken from the mentioned station reached as high levels as 7200 µS/cm, 56.0 meq/l, 16.2 meq/l, 18.1 meq/l, 52.7 meq/l, 3.2 meq/l, 21.5 meq/l, 27.7 and 16.2 meq/l, respectively. Key words: water, pollution, salinization, alkalinization
