Abstract
    Ostracods are a group of meiofaunal Crustacea with bivalved shells that are commonly preserved as microfossils in lacustrine, estuarine, and marine sediments. Various ostracod taxa inhabit freshwater, coastal, and shallow marine habitats in narrow ecological zones limited by salinity, substrate, and other environmental factors. Thus, they make ideal proxies for changes in coastal environments due to relative sea-level changes and for identifying paleoshorelines. This chapter summarizes the applicability of ostracods to sea-level research including discussion of several case studies of rapid sea-level rise.
