Abstract
OURCOAST is a three-year project commissioned by the DG Environment of the European Commission to support and ensure the exchange of experiences and best practices in integrated coastal zone management. The project was made possible by the European Parliament by approving a resource for this purpose in the EU budget in 2008. One of the main objectives and results of this project is the construction of an ICZM Database where hundreds of experiences of integrated approaches to coastal management issues applied throughout Europe are made available. These case studies will be collected, described in summaries and grouped under particular themes and key approaches, which will also serve as the base for the search mechanism within the database. A comparative analysis will be undertaken, as another important outcome of OURCOAST in which the case studies will be analysed regarding their effectiveness, success and fail factors of the approaches and tools. The results of the project and the ICZM Database will integrate a user-friendly and multilingual website which will continue evolving well after the project is concluded.
