Abstract | Whaling and herring fisheries constituted major economic activities during the Dutch Golden Age (1600-1800). Whaling, in particular, contributed to the exploration of the Arctic. The focus of this paper is the analysis of five short published texts written by Pieter Cramer (1721-1776) that provide mid-18th century meteorological information as well as some observations on Arctic climate during summer season whaling in Greenland and Davis Strait. |
