Abstract
    In December of 2014 a systematic survey of cetaceans started in the Adriatic and Ionian Sea, employing ferry as platform of observation simultaneously with marine traffic and floating marine macro litter monitoring. During the first monitoring season (December 2014 – November 2015) 9000 km (190 hours) of effort were conducted in good weather condition, and 60 sightings of cetaceans belonging to 4 species were realized. The mean sighting per unit effort (SPUE) of the whole period was 0.007 (sight/km effort). Striped (Stenella coeruleoalba Meyen 1833) and bottlenose (Tursiops truncatus Montahu 1821) dolphins were the two most sighted species, with respectively 26 and 22 sightings (SPUE: 0.003 and 0.002). Presence and distribution of species varied among the seasons. Anthropogenic pressures, such as maritime traffic and marine litter, were also monitored while looking for cetaceans. The results of the first monitoring season highlighted that the boat traffic is greater in absence of dolphins than in presence of them, and that the marine litter is more abundant in the investigated area than in the western Mediterranean, with a greater pollution of the Adriatic Sea compared to the Ionian Sea. Both data on cetacean’s presence and anthropogenic pressures should be taken into account while assessing cetacean’s state of conservation in a specific area.
