Abstract | The study reports on 108 taxa of marine and estuarine macrofauna and -flora that are claimed to be non-indigenous in German coastal waters. Exotic species introduced by humans as well as cryptogenic organisms of uncertain origin are included, and some erroneous records are discussed. We reviewed 610 publications as well as numerous internet databases and sites on neobiota. Our personal unpublished records are also included and some recent records were kindly provided by colleagues. Seventy species have evidently been introduced. These include well established species and species which have been discovered recently. Eleven species were established in the past but lack recent records and are assumed now to be extinct. Of the 16 cryptogenic species, the majority (13) is established. Although their origin is uncertain, it is also plausible to regard them as non-indigenous. A further 11 species were either incorrectly reported for German coastlines, cannot be regarded as alien species in a strict sense or their status is presently under debate. Seven species are considered to be invasive and the cause of strong ecological and/or economic effects. In addition, we list 35 neobiota that are likely to appear in German waters in the near future since they are already known from adjacent coastlines of the North or Baltic Sea. |
