Abstract | Nemopsis bachei is a jellyfish native to the Atlantic coast of North America. In the 19th century, this jellyfish species reached Europe via attachment of the polyps to ship hulls or via ballast water. The temporary jellyfish stage (also called the medusa) in the reproductive cycle of N. bachei allowed the species to locally spread very rapidly. The first observations of N. bachei medusae along the Belgian coast are from 1996. This sighting occurred in the port of Zeebrugge. |
